Civil War Road Show
VideoIn the PressA “Twelve-year-old [visitor] learned about the Civil War in his sixth-grade history class last year. But he said having the opportunity to tour an interactive traveling Civil War museum at Penn Park in York City Sunday afternoon was way more interesting than sitting in a traditional classroom setting.” -- Lauren Whetzel, York Dispatch, 2011
A visitor was most interested "To know that Pennsylvania was one of the states to allow African-Americans to join the military free of slavery…You watch History Channel, and they leave that part out. When you come here you see the detail.” -- Road Show visitor (in Emily Opilo, York Daily Record, 2011) "You’re going to really experience diverse perspectives." -- Stacey Bollinger, York County Historical Trust (in Eyana Adah McMillan, Centre Daily Times, 2011) "Terrific...The Road Show staff was very professional and nice to work with and the setup crews, vendors and outside groups were wonderful." -- Marianne Squyres, Chair, Legacies and Lessons: Western Delaware County Presents the Civil War at 150 (in Eileen Shomo, Garnet Valley Press, 2011) "The contents of the Road Show trailer, which saw a steady stream of visitors for two days, were everything they were advertised to be...[an 11-year-old visitor] was thrilled that he was able to share his grandmother['s] story in the Road Show's Share Your Story recording booth. 'It was wonderful,' [his mother] said of the exhibit. 'I learned a lot about the Civil War and about the Garnet Valley area today.'" -- Eileen Shomo, Garnet Valley Press, 2011 "I think this is great...It's very well done. I had an opportunity to visit the Civil War Museum in Philadelphia before it closed but this is very good." -- Road Show visitor (in Eileen Shomo, Garnet Valley Press, 2011) "The road show is interactive and will hold the attention of young and old alike. Diaries and other source materials can be read or listed to through telephone-like devices; original photographs from the war are presented through stereoscopes; comic strips recount events and life during the war; and tools used by soldiers can be touched and not just looked at." -- Rachel Bryson, Record Herald, 2011 "I think it’s wonderful…I feel very close to [my relatives who were in Chambersburg when it was burned by Rebels in 1864] after seeing all they went through." -- Road Show visitor (in Rachel Bryson, Record Herald, 2011) "I am quite impressed…I think getting to see the personal side of what people saw and experienced, you can feel a little of what they felt. It brings it home. It’s personal." -- Larry Alexander, President, Cumberland Valley Civil War Round Table (in Rachel Bryson, Record Herald, 2011) | CLIENT: Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission/Pennsylvania Heritage Society, Harrisburg
We developed the Civil War Road Show for PA Civil War 150. This unique exhibition experience is based in an expandable tractor-trailer that will travel to all 67 counties in the state from 2011 to 2014. In addition to curating the on-board exhibition, we worked with contractors to implement the Show and coordinated the host application process and first-year tour schedule. Services Provided:
